Philos

A Studio Indigo X The Glenrothes X Little Halstock Collaboration

Welcome to Philos, a world-first across yachting, whisky and design. In pursuit of an unprecedented creation – crafting the world’s first self-pouring gimble exclusively for the esteemed whisky maker, The Glenrothes, the Studio Indigo team looked to the science of astronomy and storied heritage and art of whisky craftsmanship for inspiration. Designed for the luxury yacht, Philos combines precision engineering with contemporary aesthetics and the finest craftsmanship and is a masterwork of design. A sculptural object that is designed to protect and pour the most precious whisky, the fabled Demijohn1969.

Leaning on a beautiful partnership with the renowned craftsmanship and artistry of Little Halstock, purveyors of the world’s most exquisite heirlooms, the palette was meticulously composed using a blend of liquid metals and hand painted veneers to capture the soul of this precious single-malt. Philos fuses purpose, aesthetics, and artistry, in a deceptively simple expression of the nature of this finest whisky. Not only does Philos protect the liquid, but it also embodies The Glenrothes’ distinctive philosophy of unparalleled beauty, attention to detail and storytelling, combining to enrich a moment in time.

ABOUT THE DEMIJOHN 1969

The Glenrothes is the creator and curator of rare aged single malts. As custodians of some of the world’s oldest and finest single malts. The whisky was laid down in cask on the 31st of July 1969. Nearly a decade ago, when the whisky reached 44 Years Old, the cask was identified as containing liquid of truly remarkable quality and transported into six glass demijohns (jars) to make sure it stayed as it was, a moment suspended in time. Master Whisky Maker, Laura Rampling, describes the liquid from Demijohn 1969 as a “unicorn whisky” – one that stops you in your tracks, then haunts you with the knowledge you will never see it again. There is an undeniable aura of magic surrounding Demijohn 1969.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT

Guided by an innate curiosity and with a pursuit of timeless beauty, Anna Lisa Stone, Head of Creative at The Glenrothes, spearheaded a quest to honour the remarkable Demijohn 1969 whisky. Studio Indigo was delighted to collaborate with the visionary Glenrothes team on such an exciting endeavour. Led by Directors and Co-Leads of the Interiors team Olga Fox and Lyne Arbid, alongside Head of Brand, Daniella Perez Herrera, the Studio embarked on a mission to challenge conventions and transcend boundaries through a unique design that would encapsulate our passion for creating story-laden heirlooms and innovative yacht design.

To bring this vision to life, we enlisted the expertise of luxury artisans, Little Halstock. Situated in rural Dorset, renowned for their mastery in luxury craftsmanship and creative problem solving, Little Halstock played a pivotal role in crafting Philos. At the heart of this partnership lies a ground-breaking innovation —the world’s first self-pouring decanter-gimbal, named Philos. The name was chosen to honour the Greek inventor of the gimbal, Philo of Byzantium (280–220 BC), infusing the creation with a profound sense of love and friendship.

Channelling our expertise on yacht design and luxury interiors, PHILOS culminates in a harmonious fusion of three evocative narratives:

Sky: celestial navigation. Navigation for the maritime traveller is essential, the earliest of adventurers would be guided by the stars. An homage to those first armillary spheres forms the protective essence of Philos.

Water: liquid gold. A harmonious celebration of The Glenrothes’ profound relationship between whisky and water, finding resonance within the boat lovers for whom Philos is meticulously crafted

Place: the Glen of Rothes topography. The landscape that cradles The Glenrothes distillery inspired the body of Philos. The base structure comprises stepped contour lines that mirror the shape and incline of the Glen of Rothes. In order to decant the whisky, the liquid must make its way underneath the shimmering contours before emerging into the glass. This is the same journey the water takes from The Glenrothes Estate to the distillery. This intrinsic connection to the Scottish terrain supports the whisky, wherever Philos may be in the world.

Deep blues, sea greens, flecks of gold, and glinting aluminium, softest white. Mix of textures, matte, high shine, hard and soft surfaces, to present the ‘sun’ in the solar system of Philos, the whisky itself. Philos guarantees a completely hands-free pour, employing an elegant evolution of a traditional spirit-measure operated via a remote bezel to illicit a perfect 50ml measure.

The result is artistic alchemy; a one-of-a-kind, unparalleled experience for the most discerning connoisseurs.
