A Passionate Restoration Project

Ven House is no ordinary estate. Located in the picturesque Somerset countryside, this 18th-century English Baroque gem stands as a testament to architectural grandeur and timeless elegance. Originally designed with stately proportions and striking symmetry, its history intertwines with the social and cultural fabric of Britain. Over the centuries, Ven House has evolved, each new chapter adding layers of intrigue and charm to its story.

Mike Fisher, our founder and creative director, embarked on a labour of love to restore and rejuvenate its splendour. Guided by his deep respect for heritage and an innovative design philosophy, Studio Indigo has masterfully blended the estate’s historical character with a fresh, contemporary perspective. During the podcast, he shared how his approach mirrors the ethos he applies to his clients’ homes—creating spaces that spark joy and delight while preserving the soul of the property.

Fisher’s commitment to restoration extended to rediscovering architectural details that had been lost to time. With the help of historical plans by Decimus Burton, he brought forgotten elements back to life, ensuring the estate’s legacy is not just remembered but celebrated. Geoff and Rory explored this narrative during their tour of the estate, marvelling at its manicured gardens, intricate interiors and the remarkable balance between old and new.

Designing for Delight

The interiors of Ven House reflect Studio Indigo’s signature style—a blend of respect for tradition and a bold, modern sensibility. Acknowledging the high bar set by previous owner Jasper Conran, Fisher reimagined the interiors with a discerning eye for colour, fabric, textures and art. Each room is a haven, designed to transport its guests with luxurious touches like their very own en-suite bathrooms and thoughtful details, including water and chocolates on the bedside tables.

A particular highlight of Ven House is its art collection. Contemporary works, such as a series of portraits by Diarmuid Kelly, provide a striking juxtaposition to the home’s Georgian character, creating a dialogue between past and present. These portraits, modern interpretations of classical portraiture, underscore Fisher’s vision of breathing new life into historical settings.

Beyond its architectural significance, Ven House has become a cornerstone of its local community. He has opened the estate’s gardens to local church members and providing its produce with The Clockspire, a fine dining restaurant in Milborne Port also designed by Studio Indigo. Through these efforts, Fisher has transformed Ven House into not just a private residence but a shared treasure that enriches its surroundings.
