Planning approved for Kensington Terrace Project
Studio Indigo is pleased to announce the planning approval for the refurbishment of an 1820s Grade II Listed terrace in Kensington.
Built in the early 19th century the property which sits on the Scarsdale and Abingdon conservation area, posed a set of challenges due to its historical merit with much of the existing layout representing an important time in architectural history. Externally, the terrace forms part of a stylistic uniform set of unique frontages which are a notable historic example of neo-classical urban planning; furthermore, the dwelling is arranged around a prestigious communal private garden square.
Internally, the building is in extremely poor condition and needs major refurbishment as there has been little work undertaken since the early 1930s. Much of the services are unfit for contemporary living, are outdated and detract from the significance of the building.
Studio Indigo’s expertise with historical and grade-listed buildings means having a deep understanding of British architecture, and our proposal seeks to sensitively restore, repair and refurbish the original fabric of the dwelling. The fireplaces, doors and window architraves, cornices and skirting aim to be retained within the main house with its original 1820’s internal layout respected and reinstated where lost.
The family home will be expanded at ground level by modifying the unsympathetic 1920s extension and making use of the basement once again which is currently derelict and water damaged. The extension will feature a conservatory/glass-type enclosure which will soften the existing harsh visual appearance of the rear elevation.
The project aims to respect the past whilst introducing a layout that will meet the requirements of the family’s lifestyle and 21st century needs.
The planning approval is of significant importance to the Studio, with the planning application process taking just under a year. However, the team’s determination and well-thought-out application has resulted in a positive conclusion.
