Originally two houses, this classic Holland Park villa had been extended 20 years ago but it have never successfully integrated. It sill had two front doors, two staircases and there were only two points of connection between each ‘house’ - one on the ground floor and one at the top of the house.

The initial challenge was to seamlessly integrate the two ‘halves’, the second was to create a home which would allow the client to start a new chapter in her life. As the client had many others homes, this was to become a ‘summer house’, filled with light and orientated towards the wonderful west facing garden; fireplaces and curtains were not needed. The exotic and well-travelled client wanted a bright new home which would give both her inherited and collected furniture and art a new twist.
Light and neutral colours now provide the perfect backdrop to her colourful art collection and striking furniture. A new lateral 40ft wide living space now stretches across the back of the house and is flooded with light from the west and above. Housing the sitting room and an informal dining room, it overlooks the garden and provides the everyday living area. Off this are the formal dining room and an enormous kitchen space, separated by contemporary sliding doors - allowing light to flood right through the house from the East to West. The floors above contain the bedroom suites for ‘him’ and ‘her’ as well as for any guests.

The new house has been re-planned around the larger of the original staircases, which now reaches all floors - massively improving the home’s flow, while also providing a focus. Light and colour are everywhere - perfectly suiting the cheerfulness of the client and her husband. The next chapter in their lives will hopefully be one of the best.
